Looking back on the Bush years with fondness...
I'll almost miss the Bush years when they are done. It'll go down as the era when 'Republican' became synonymous with 'incompetent', 'corrupt' and 'closet homosexual'.
Ah, the good ol' days...

Progress?
From the Raleigh News & Observer:
Bombing toll soars over 500
The disaster's true scale is becoming clear a week after the attacks on the Yazidi sect
Damien Cave and James Glanz, The New York Times
BAGHDAD, IRAQ - One week after a series of truck bombs hit a poor rural area near the Syrian border, the known casualty toll has soared to more than 500 dead and 1,500 wounded, according to the Iraqi Red Crescent Society, making it by far the bloodiest coordinated attack since the American-led invasion in 2003.
...
Atrios has a good point. The Oklahoma City bombing resulted in less than 200 casualties, which was a tremendous national disaster over here. It's just another blip on the screen among other news from Iraq. What are we doing over there?

Gonzalez resigns!
It's about darn time. I've been busy today so haven't read/heard much about it yet.
I wonder who will replace him. Harriet Miers?!

The War as We Saw It
For some strange reason, this Op-Ed in the New York Times has gotten far less play in the media than previous pro-surge Op-Eds. Written by 7 soldiers at the tail-end of a 15-month deployment, it should resonate stronger with the mainstream media and, subsequently, the public at large.

Gonzales "eager to expand the use of capital punishment"
'F' The President
I've had this one 'F The President' bumper sticker on my vehicle since the 2004 campaign. Just recently I have been getting positive comments from friends and strangers alike. Today someone pulled up next to me honking, hollering and giving me a 'thumbs up' over it. They asked me where I got it, but I could not recall so I told them to "Google it". Since it seems to be so popular these days, what with Shrub's low approval ratings, I thought I'd share.

Giuliani's 5 Big Lies About 9/11
A complete takedown of Rudy Giuliani's claims of leadership on terrorism and 9/11.
BIG LIES:
1. 'I think the thing that distinguishes me on terrorism is, I have more experience dealing with it.'
2. 'I don't think there was anyplace in the country, including the federal government, that was as well prepared for that attack as New York City was in 2001.'
3. Don't blame me for 7 WTC, Rudy says.
4. 'Democrats do not understand the full nature and scope of the terrorist war against us.'
5. 'Every effort was made by Mayor Giuliani and his staff to ensure the safety of all workers at Ground Zero.'

Obama: "Change We Need" vs. "Conventional Washington"
I'm starting to like Barack Obama more and more as I hear him challenge conventional wisdom of the Washington establishment. Check out this memo written by Samantha Power, a Harvard Professor and top foreign policy advisor to Obama.
It was Washington’s conventional wisdom that led us into the worst strategic blunder in the history of US foreign policy. The rush to invade Iraq was a position advocated by not only the Bush Administration, but also by editorial pages, the foreign policy establishment of both parties, and majorities in both houses of Congress. Those who opposed the war were often labeled weak, inexperienced, and even naïve.
Barack Obama defied conventional wisdom and opposed invading Iraq. He did so at a time when some told him that doing so would doom his political future...

AFl-CIO Dem Debate Summary
Salon has a good summary/timeline of last night's AFL-CIO Democratic debate. There were some pretty interesting exchanges and the crowd was pretty vocal and lively. Crooks and Liars has a few video snippets here, here and here.
