Notes on the Debate

I just got back from a Debate Party at the Northwest Detroit MCC office and I wanted to jot some first impression before I turn in. Overall, the debate was a disappointment as far as substance - no surprise there.

DeVos- He's maybe not as stupid as Dubya, but otherwise, they're strikingly similar. Innapropriate mannerisms (laughing when nothing is funny), and no evidence that he has thought about issues in any meaningful way. Like GW, it seems he feels he's entitled to be governor.

Granholm - Almost Clintonesque, total mastery of the issues, facts, figures. She was poised and in control, and from the very beginning the dominant presence in the debate. The only real drama of the night came when Jennie brought up a Devos investment (not in his disclusure statement) in a chain of nursing homes where there were allegations of physical and sexual abuse. Think deer in headlights.

If this is what we can expext in the next two debates, this won't even be close.

I also had the pleasure of chatting briefly with Rep. John Conyers. I always thought he came across as somewhat aloof, but in person he's very open and amiable. He says the republicans tried everything to keep the Foley scandal from breaking, right up till Friday night. TOO LATE! Pelosi was all over it.
